Certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) as the #1-selling solo artist in U.S. history, Garth Brooks has sold in excess of 128 million albums. He is the only solo artist in RIAA history to have six albums top the 10 million mark. His most recent release, The Ultimate Hits, has been certified five times platinum. Garth became the first artist to put out a simultaneous edition of his latest collection for a charitable cause. November 6, 2007 saw the launch of the pink edition of The Ultimate Hits, available only at the Susan G. Komen Web site. His body of work -- including the groundbreaking No Fences, Ropin' The Wind, The Hits and Double Live -- propelled country music as a genre to the front pages of newspapers worldwide and the covers of magazines, to the point where Forbes declared on its cover, "Country Conquers Rock," and featured Garth in a major music piece. According to the RIAA, Garth Brooks is the top-selling solo artist of the 20th century.

The key to his record-setting success lies within the personality and talent of Garth Brooks. It has been said that through the 1990s, Garth's only real competition was himself. He brought daring individualism and a love of music to the table. His wide range encompasses a variety of styles which include working-class blues, honky tonk, bluegrass and arena rock. His easy-going, approachable charisma was matched only by his fearless willingness to take chances and step outside the lines. He has had an unprecedented run so far, and opened the doors for many more country artists to follow.

Garth has received every accolade the recording industry can bestow on an artist, including two Grammys, 17 American Music Awards, 11 Country Music Association Awards, 18 Academy of Country Music Awards, five World Music Awards, 12 People's Choice Awards and 36 Billboard Music Awards. He was named "Artist of the '90s" at the 1997 Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, received the Artist Achievement Award at the 1997 Billboard Music Awards and was named "Artist of the Decade" at the American Music Awards in 2000 and the Academy of Country Music Awards in 1999.

In the midst of one of the most successful careers in music history, Garth retired in 2001, delivered his last record for Capitol Records and moved back to Oklahoma to raise his children.  While in retirement, when called upon by events greater than his own self-interest, he returned to the stage. The latest of these was when the President himself requested that Garth headline President Obama's Inaugural Celebration at the Lincoln Memorial. He performed as Barack and Michelle Obama, their girls, Joe and Jill Biden and a crowd of over 300,000 lined the mall from the Lincoln Memorial all the way to the Washington Monument. It was a moment in history when all did the "wave" to Garth's performance of "Shout" while the President sang along. Once again, Garth was called upon by the network to perform for President Obama's very first late night TV appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. When the Governor of California asked for Garth's help, he responded by performing five concerts in two days, where proceeds from 83,000 tickets sold were donated to efforts to prevent fire catastrophes. Portions of the live concerts were shown as a TV special, "Garth Brooks: Live in L.A." where viewers donated to the organization Fire Intervention Relief Effort (FIRE).

Oct. 15, 2009, Brooks announced that he was out of retirement: "I am naturally nervous, but it feels good to be out from under the low ceiling of 'retirement' I put on myself."  Brooks has entered a five-year "relationship" with Las Vegas resort developer, Steve Wynn.

Cirque du Soleil, in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises, a CKX, Inc (NASDAQ: CKXE) company, celebrates the world premiere of its latest resident show Viva ELVIS™, at ARIA Resort & Casino™ at CityCenter in Las Vegas tonight.

vivaElvis.jpgIn attendance at tonight's event: Priscilla Presley, Robert F.X. Sillerman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of CKX, Inc., Bill McBeath, President and COO of ARIA Resort & Casino and Guy Laliberté, Founder of Cirque du Soleil among other distinguished guests.

The Show

Viva ELVIS, a harmonious fusion of dance, acrobatics and live music, is a tribute to the life and music of Elvis Presley. Nostalgia, modernity and raw emotion provide the backdrop for his immortal voice and the exhilaration and beauty of his music.

Created in the image of The King of Rock 'n' Roll - powerful, sexy, whimsical, truly unique and larger than life - the show highlights an American icon who transformed popular music and whose image embodies the freedom, excitement and turbulence of his era.

Viva ELVIS focuses on the essential humanity of the one superstar whose name will forever be linked with the history of Las Vegas: Elvis Presley. Significant moments in his life - intimate, playful and grandiose - blend with timeless songs that remain as relevant today as when they first hit the top of the charts.

The Music

In paying homage to the music of Elvis, Cirque du Soleil set out to present the songs of the King of Rock 'n' Roll in a contemporary form that evokes the spirit of Elvis in every way.  Thirty of Elvis' songs are used in the production, with remixes designed to accentuate and boost the emotional charge of his performances.  Elvis' voice is the only male singing voice in Viva ELVIS, joined by occasionally live female singers and an energetic live band. The only way to convey the true vitality and seductive charm of Elvis is with Elvis himself.

The Costumes

The Viva ELVIS costumes are inspired by Presley's life, his entourage, his concerts and his films. The fabulous imagination of '50s and '60s America, expressed through the cinema, advertising and magazines of the time, was a source of inspiration for costume designer Stefano Canulli.

The Theatre and Sets

The Elvis Theater, designed by Creation Director Johnny Boivin from Cirque du Soleil, has a conventional proscenium layout reminiscent of an opera house. The stage, the backstage area and wings accommodate the large-scale set elements and the need for speed in changing scenes imposed by the rapid pace of the show. Mark Fisher's set designs illustrate many of the most significant events in the life and career of Elvis.

The Stratosphere Las Vegas Hotel & Casino today announced the addition of their next big thrill - SkyJump Las Vegas. What will undoubtedly become one of the top tourist attractions in North America, the skyjump is best described as a "controlled freefall." Lucky adrenaline junkies and average Joes alike, will have the opportunity to plummet 855 feet at a scream-inducing speed of up to 40 mph - all while enjoying breathtaking views of the world famous Las Vegas Strip ... if they can bear to keep their eyes open.

strato-LV.jpg

SkyJump Las Vegas will offer a way to experience thrills similar to skydiving and base jumping - with the added benefit of doing it over the Las Vegas Strip - day or night. The attraction is expected to open April of 2010, and will join three thrill rides already atop the tower: Big Shot, X-Scream and Insanity.

"We're incredibly excited to bring SkyJump Las Vegas to the Stratosphere," said Frank Riolo, CEO of American Casino & Entertainment Properties. "This will not only be North America's only skyjump, but also the highest skyjump in the world."

Riders of SkyJump Las Vegas will be given a short safety lesson and then they will be suited up in Stratosphere's custom "jump suits." The rider is then connected to a patented high-speed "descender" machine and led to the edge of a small platform where they will leap out and descend the 100+ story height of Stratosphere. Guide wires keep riders from straying off course in what is an incredibly safe, yet audacious adventure. Just prior to reaching the rapidly approaching ground, the machine slows the rider down, bringing them to a controlled and safe landing.

"While the entire experience - from preparation to landing - takes just 30 minutes, the thrill will last a lifetime," Riolo continued. "Stratosphere has made a commitment to reinvesting in our property at all levels and this will be an outstanding addition for everyone - whether you're making the leap yourself or watching those daring enough to do it."

The Stratosphere Hotel & Casino is located at 2000 Las Vegas Boulevard South. For more information, call 702-380-7777 or toll free at 1-800-99-TOWER (998-6937) or visit www.stratospherehotel.com.
